{I don’t want to suck, I want to fill}

I had the most amazing experience this past few days at WPPI!  I had dreams of learning everything I could about shooting, lighting, and posing.  Instead I learned some things that changed my life.

What I learned at wppi:

There was one thing that really stood out to me about the speakers.  Every single one of them is very passionate and emotional about photography.  Every class I went to I ended up with tears in my eyes at one point or another.  These people are very emotionally tied to each and every one of their images.  You can just see that it’s about feelings and shooting as if it was one of your loved ones.  I am convinced that is what makes these amazing photographers stand out.  They sincerely care about their clients and they invest themselves in a relationship so they aren’t just clients but friends.  What I learned is more valuable than anything about technique could have been.  Now I realize that my goal is to find out who my clients are and what they love.  I’m going to shoot a wedding like it was one of my very own daughters getting married.  I’m going to learn everything about my clients story and let them know how much I deeply care.  I’m going to take pictures that bring tears to my clients eyes because of how it makes them feel inside whenever they look at it.  What is most important to me is not an award winning image but a heart warming one.  If I can do that then I can truly be a success.

p.s.  thanks to my amazing new friends I met for a wonderful time.  Don’t worry about my bald spot, it’ll grow back. 😉

p.s.s. Jamie Schultz shared this with us and it just tugged at my heart.

You Suck

…the air out of a room when you make it all about you.

…the life out of everyone around you when you make it all about you.

…the joy out of every endeavor when you make it all about you.

…the lightness out of every quest when you make it all about you.

…the potential out of every business when you make it all about you.

You fill.

…every room,

…every person,

…every endeavor,

…every quest,

…every business with life, with energy, with potential,

When you make it all about them.

The challenge is to serve, solve and delight from a place of genuine personal interest without relying on the experience to complete you.

  • Crystal - I am a huge fan. Thanks for the post! I try to be this way and have started questioning if I am doing it wrong. Maybe I get too invested and ‘friendly’ with my clients. Maybe I don’t make it enough about me. But this was reaffirmation to keep going down the path I have chosen. It truly is who I am and it’s ok. 🙂ReplyCancel
